David was a man of principle. He spoke in support of what was right and just. He was committed to Joan and his children enabling them to express themselves in contributing ways to community. He had the best tandem trailer and was great to go collecting firewood with. His bbq cooking kept many happy. His regularity and commitment to morning walks epitomised his determination to strengthen his resolve in his actions to make our world a better place. He is remembered fondly by all my family.Peter Hirst

Remembering David as a great conversationalist always interested in us - the children of his and Joans longtime friends Judy(Hooper) and Peter McQuie . A wonderful friend and golfing partner and keen football adversary to my parents over a very long time even all those years after my mums close friend Joan passed away. Support even in ill health to dad over the past months since Judy passed. RIP David , love to Michelle and Rohan and families xxx love Sarah and all the McQuie family members

I knew David through the Industrial Society of Victoria. He was a person of integrity with extensive knowledge of industrial relations. I am saddened by his passing and I will miss our occasional talks on the topic of IR.
Steve Knott — 24 January 2024
For about 30 years Ive attended a bi monthly Elgin/Emerald luncheon of current and former IR professionals.David was a regular attendee and constructive contributor to sometimes robust but always respectful discussions.Wonderful gentleman & will be sadly missed.Thoughts with family & friends.
Greg Bamber — 24 January 2024
I am impressed by the distinguished group of Industrial Relations (IR) academics that he helped to recruit and to mentor at Victoria University, and by his long service to the IR Society of Victoria in most of its key roles. He much deserved its president Julian Teicher awarding Life Membership to him in late 2023. It is a shame that he did not live longer to enjoy the honour. He also was active in the Australian Labour and Employment Relations Association, and the International Labor and Employment Relations Association. He was a decent man and a great contributor to the IR community and to IR education. Hell be greatly missed. Am thinking of his family and other friends.Prominent UK academic John Purcell says "He was a good scholar and I learnt a lot from him which I have used throughout my career....(I) loved him for his warmth and good humour. I remember him fondly."Dr Elsa Underhill is kindly writing an obituary for the IR Society of Victoria.

David was a wonderful person - so willing to share his considerable knowledge and always in a calm and rational manner - not always a given in HR/IR. As a Commissioner at FWA and predecessors and Deputy Chancellor of Victoria University I was fortunate to have those connections with him. Condolences to his family.
