Stuart was unique in the inspiring and generous encouragement he extended to all students. He was wise, witty, kind, and gentle. Personally, he offered support to me throughout my career in history, encouraging me first to do honours, then masters and more recently a PhD. He inspired so many and will be greatly missed.
